This course is aimed to cover the general management of chronic periodontitis within a general practice setting. The first day covers the principles of diagnosis and treatment planning, followed on by effective non-surgical treatment. The day is broken up into lectures interspersed with small group discussions, allowing more interactive discussion about the course participants concerns and looking at treatment planning of periodontal cases. Also considered in the group discussions are instrumentation and producing a periodontal protocol for the practice.

The second day looks at the limitations of non-surgical treatment in moderate to advanced cases and outlines the use of basic periodontal surgery techniques. In the afternoon there will be a hands-on periodontal surgery session on pig’s jaws.

A detailed look at periodontal diagnosis and classification, examining all the factors that need to be looked at for ascertaining periodontal prognosis and required for proper treatment planning. An outline of periodontal classification where it is relevant to diagnosis and treatment planning will be presented.

11.15 Treatment Planning
A detailed look at how treatment planning should be performed to ultimately provide treatment that is appropriate for the patient. Treatment planning for periodontal disease, and also for more complicated multi-disciplinary restorative cases are considered.
12.00 Perio treatment pathway
Case discussions Parts 1 and 2
Interactive session that involves group discussion to consider what decisions should be made during the treatment of periodontal disease, and when these decisions should be made. The group is then divided for small group discussions. These will cover case discussions, instruments and sharpening and producing a periodontal protocol for your practice.

2.00 Scaling instruments
A reminder of the instruments involved in non-surgical treatment. Different types of curette are examined and the practical difference considered. Ultrasonic instruments are also presented. Tips for effective non-surgical treatment will be given

3.30 Aims and rationale of debridement
The different types of instrumentation techniques are presented and these put into the context of actual patient treatment. The expected results of non-surgical treatment will also be considered.
4.00 Non-surgical adjuncts
The chemical agents that are being offered to dentists as aids to non-surgical treatment are discussed and the expected benefits presented with a brief look at the literature presented to sell them.
